Kyogle

The Kyogle Local Government Area (LGA) is located in the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales. Kyogle is the main township and is surrounded by a number of smaller rural villages such as Tabulam, Woodenbong, Bonalbo, Wiangaree, Cawongla, Grevillia, Old Bonalbo, and Mallanganee.

The Richmond River and the Clarence River are the two main rivers in the LGA. The Richmond River causes flood issues in Kyogle and the Clarence river causes flooding in Tabulam. Within the upper reaches of the Clarence River catchment flash flooding can affect Urbenville area - Tooloom Creek, Old Bonalbo area - Bonalbo Creek, Bonalbo area - Peacock Creek. Within the upper reaches of the Richmond River catchment flash flooding can affect all tributaries upstream of Wiangaree, the Fawcett's Plain area - Fawcett's Creek.

The local information page provides valuable resources for your Local Government Area (LGA). You can explore flood information for your local river catchment through Local Flood Insights, access local flood plans and guides, and connect with local councils and NSW SES units.

Kyogle

Kyogle has a history of frequent flooding, particularly from the Richmond River. Significant floods occurred in 1954, 1967, 1976, and 2017. Flooding usually starts in the upper catchment near Wiangaree, rising quickly and causing short-term disruptions. While most of Kyogle is on higher ground, areas such as "The Flats" and parts of Fawcett Street are prone to flooding, primarily due to simultaneous peaks in the Richmond River and Fawcett's Creek.

Tabulam

Tabulam, situated on the upper Clarence River, experiences flooding from the river and nearby Tabulam Rivulet, with additional backwater flooding from the Timbarra River. The Bruxner Highway divides the village, with most properties on higher ground, although some in a natural gully are vulnerable during large floods. Significant floods occurred in 1954, 1863, 1976, 2011, and 2013. Rural communities in the Clarence River valley, such as Paddy's Flat and Bonalbo, often face isolation due to localised flooding.

Local Flood Insights

The Local Flood Insights tool offers an overview of flood-prone areas, historic flood events, and modelled flood risks through detailed maps, data and community stories. This website-based platform combines flood inundation mapping, photos and personal accounts from local residents about the impacts of past floods and ways to prepare for future floods.

This information is useful to community members, travellers, or anyone wanting to learn more about local flooding. Explore NSW SES Local Flood Insights to make informed decisions about flood safety and preparedness.
