The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is urging the community to be prepared as damaging winds and possible thunderstorms are forecast to impact Sydney, the Illawarra and Hunter Coast this afternoon.

A vigorous southerly wind change currently located along the South Coast will move rapidly northwards along the coast this afternoon. The wind change is likely to reach the Sydney coast in the middle of the afternoon and then extend further north to the Newcastle coastline by early evening.

Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are possible along parts of the Illawarra, Sydney and Hunter coast, as the southerly change moves through during the afternoon and early evening.

Severe thunderstorms are also possible over parts of Sydney and the Hunter during the afternoon or early evening.

While the NSW SES has prepositioned assets and personnel ahead of the weather, NSW SES State Duty Commander, Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns, is urging the community to know their risks and prepare early.

“Strong winds could bring down trees and powerlines, as well as cause damage to properties,” Assistant Commissioner Kearns said.

“Residents and holidaymakers across greater Sydney should download the Hazards Near Me app and set up local watch zones to stay across the latest warnings and information.

“Taking the time now to prepare your home by securing or putting away loose items around your yard or balcony will ensure you’re as prepared as possible.”

For emergency assistance during a flood, storm or tsunami, call NSW SES on 132 500. In a life-threatening emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
