The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is urging communities across Northern NSW to remain vigilant as Tropical Cyclone Alfred continues to move towards the coast.

The cyclone is now expected to make landfall between Noosa and Coolangatta late Friday or early Saturday morning – bringing destructive winds, dangerous storm surges and significant flooding.

Major flooding is expected across the regions from Tweed Heads and Port Macquarie.

Emergency Warnings/evacuations have been issued for the following locations; Lismore, parts of Coraki, Kyogle, Fingal Head, Billinudgel, Uki, Bungawalbin, Tumbulgum, Bowraville, Macksville, parts of Port Macquarie (North Shore, Settlement Point, Hastings River Dr & Hibbard Dr).

During storms and cyclones, we can often see interruptions to essential services including telephone, internet and electricity. NSW SES is encouraging the public to have alternatives in place such as a battery powered radio.

Approximately 29,000 dwellings are currently under watch and act or emergency warnings, with approximately 15,000 people across the state already ordered to evacuate.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan said it is important to follow emergency warnings and evacuation advice.

“Although Cyclone Alfred is moving slower than expected, this remains a serious and dangerous weather event. The community must remain vigilant and stay informed. If you are in an evacuation warning area, act now before conditions deteriorate.”

“Cyclone Alfred has already caused significant damage, leaving many homes and businesses without power.”

The M1 between Tweed Heads and Byron Bay is now closed, and all non-essential travel should be avoided, except for those under evacuation orders.

Significant resources have been deployed, including over 2,000 NSW SES volunteers, and more than half a million sandbags have been distributed to assist communities.

Since the weather event began, NSW SES has responded to 4,252 incidents, including six flood rescues.
