The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) has responded to more than 550 incidents as widespread thunderstorms damaged homes and flooded roads.
The NSW SES has responded to more than 20 flood rescue incidents across the Sydney Metropolitan area on Monday afternoon as flooded roads caught motorists by surprise.
In Southern NSW, more than 130 incidents were reported overnight in Harden, with a flood rescue in Galong and buildings at nearby Junee High School impacted by floodwater.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting severe thunderstorms to continue across the southern and central inland, western slopes, ranges, and parts of the northeast this evening and into tomorrow. Further heavy rainfall and flash flooding is possible, along with a risk of large hail and damaging winds.
NSW SES State Duty Commander, Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan said crews are continuing to respond to storm and flood related incidents and urged people to make safe decisions.
“Flash flooding can occur suddenly and without warning. If you come across a flooded road, turn around – there is always another way” Assistant Commissioner Hogan said.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, severe thunderstorms are expected to shift to the northeast quarter of the state, including the northwest plains.
Assistant Commissioner Hogan urged residents to know their risks and take necessary precautions.
“With further severe weather likely over the coming days, take steps now to prepare. Park vehicles under cover, tie down loose items and check gutters and drains at your home for blockages,” she said.
A cold front is predicted to cross the state between Thursday and Saturday, bringing another bout of showers and thunderstorms to the Southers and Central areas on Friday, and to the Northeast on Saturday. Severe thunderstorms may also be possible during this period.
