The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is prepared for unsettled weather as a cold front moves across the state over the next 48 hours, with forecasts predicting damaging wind, heavy rainfall and hail.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting severe thunderstorms from this afternoon in Western parts of the state, including in Cobar, Broken Hill and Packsaddle.

Storms could produce damaging wind gusts up to 70 kilometre per hour, large hail, and localised heavy rainfall which could cause flash flooding.

NSW SES Deputy State Duty Commander, Chief Superintendent Dallas Burnes encouraged people to know their risk and take the necessary precautions during any weather in their community.

“While the NSW SES is well-prepared for flood rescue operations in areas expected to receive heavy rainfall, I would remind the community to stay informed and not take any unnecessary risks such as driving through floodwaters,” Chief Superintendent Burnes said.

“Flash flooding can occur suddenly and without an official warning. If you come across a flooded road, please turn around and find an alternative route.

“We know catchments across the state are already wet and are responding quickly to rainfall, so people should monitor the conditions and be mindful of their risks.”

On Friday, severe thunderstorms are expected to extend through southern, central and eastern NSW. Both Sydney and Canberra are a risk of seeing storms on Friday, particularly later in the afternoon or evening.

Minor riverine flooding is possible in some western and southern NSW catchments if higher possible rainfall totals come to fruition.

“Most of the state will see some rainfall as the front moves across the state, with widespread totals of up to 50 millimetres likely,” Chief Superintendent Burnes said.

“The community can download the Hazards Near Me app or visit the NSW SES website to stay across the latest information and warnings relevant to their areas.”
