NSW State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer, Peter Boukouvalas, is a rising star in Australian archery who is set to represent Australia at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

This remarkable achievement comes after nearly a decade of balancing a demanding career, volunteer work and rigorous training in his pursuit of archery excellence.

Mr Boukouvalas’ journey in archery began in 2004 when he was inspired by the archers representing Australia at the Athens Olympic Games.

His curiosity turned into a passion, and by 2016, he had begun serious training under the guidance of a coach.

Since then, he has travelled to ten countries, competing and meeting archers from around the world.

“I’ve been working towards this moment for almost nine years now,” Mr Boukouvalas said.

“It’s a dream come true to compete in the Olympics, and I’m looking forward to soaking up every moment of the experience.”

Mr Boukouvalas joined the NSW SES at the age of 17 and has built an impressive resume as an Operations Officer at the Auburn Unit.

In his role, he has been instrumental in strategic planning for flood response, managing site inspections and overseeing the maintenance of equipment.

His expertise has taken him across the state from Brewarrina to Bega and Canowindra, dealing with storm and flood related incidents.

Mr Boukouvalas commitment extends beyond his SES duties. He balances full-time work with pursuing a degree in Emergency Management at University and his commitment and passion for archery.

With an intense schedule leading up to this week’s Games, Mr Boukouvalas has been preparing in the Olympic Village before the qualifying rounds commence on 25 July.

“The objective is to win a medal, but I know that all I can do is focus on my own shooting and do my best,” he said.

Mr Boukouvalas said he has received great support from his local SES unit and his unit commander.

“My unit commander, Jamie, has a great philosophy of giving what you can, when you can, where you can.”

NSW SES Acting Commissioner, Debbie Platz APM said she was beyond proud to learn of Peter’s achievement.

“All of us here at the NSW SES wish him a successful time at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” Acting Commissioner Platz said.

“We will be cheering him on from afar and can’t wait to hear about his experience.”
